Historically, Tryon’s roots run deep. The land was once part of the Cherokee hunting grounds, with evidence of indigenous occupation dating back over 11,000 years. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto ventured here in the 16th century, meeting the Cherokee in their village of Xuala (now Tryon).

The town’s name honors William Tryon, North Carolina’s governor from 1765 to 1771, recognized for negotiating a treaty during the post-French and Indian War conflict. Today, Tryon beckons with its friendly atmosphere, mild climate, and a blend of small-town charm and cultural vibrancy.
